A region in the western Pacific Ocean to the east and south of New Guinea Island. Includes the island of New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, four independent countries: Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea, and the French dependency of New Caledonia.
